When I was in school, I used to love the english essay questions that came at the end of most tests. Though many of my fellow classmates preferred multiple-choice or true and false questions, I always enjoyed the freedom to express my answers in written form. I guess the reason for this is because our country official language is Malay. The Malays form the majority of the population. Some Malays are of Arab descent and there are sizable Chinese and Indian communities. Language of instruction in academic system is malay, but the ministry of education have made the english language a compulsory subject that must be learn at school and university level. I know that I was the minority, as many of my classmates would moan when they saw that there were essay questions tacked onto the end of a test.
My english teacher when i was in primary school is a young sweet lady. She teach me for almost 2 years and i really enjoyed learning english eventhough many of my friends find it hard to learn english language. Commonly, the english test we had at the end of our final schooling period were divided into 3 core test - reading test,listening test and writing test. The writing test is always be my favourite becouse i always want to improve my writing skills especially in english essay writing. The english essay question that given to us was usually consist a few topics to choose from, it was not a free writing essay. After deciding a topic, then you can start write the essay .
Many times essay questions are asked when a teacher wants to know you have a better grasp of a subject. Anyone can answer true or false, or perhaps pick out the right question from multiple choice, but to give a written answer shows that the concepts and theories your teacher is trying to present to you have sunken in. If a student cannot answer a question in their own words, a teacher know was that student needs more work on that particular subject.
The essay questions did not disappear after high school. When you go to college, you will run into more and more instances when you will be required to answer questions and long form. The more complicated the subject matter is the harder it is for you to understand. Your teachers or professors will assign essay questions because this may be the only way they can truly gauge your understanding of the subject material. Don’t think of essay questions as something to avoid, but think of them as a way to show your teacher what you have learned and what you need to work on.
Perhaps I never had a problem with essay questions because I love to write. You could say that my life and my work now involve me answering essay questions every day of my life. Writing has always come easy to me and perhaps that is why I always had an easy time with essay questions. Though there are times I have problems expressing myself, there is something satisfying about getting your thoughts down on paper. For the sake of whatever career you choose in the future, use essay questions as a way to work on your writing skills. You may not be a writer, but you do need to know how to write no matter what you choose to do.
